The trade-offs are patchy performance and an otherwise underwhelming feature set. The HG216D is a good-looking display, neither flashy nor drab. The screen is surrounded by two-toned (silver and black) trim, while both the rear of the cabinet and the circular base are black.
The panel sits on a short silver mounting arm that gives you a 25-degree tilt range (5 degrees forward and 20 backward), but you can't swivel the screen or adjust its height. A pair of 1-watt speakers embedded in the rear of the cabinet provides adequate output for basic system sound and low-volume music, but they are underpowered and sound tinny with the volume turned up to the halfway point. At the rear of the display are HDMI (digital) and VGA (analog) inputs, as well as an audio-in jack. You won't find a DVI connector or USB ports on this model, but I'm pleased to see that HDMI technology is finally making its way into affordable displays.
Unfortunately, an HDMI cable is not part of the deal, but you can pick up a decent 6-foot cable for under $20 if you shop around. The HG216D does come with VGA and audio cables, however.
Five function buttons, including the power switch, are tucked away under the lower right bezel, but they're still easy to reach. I'd suggest coloring the labels with a black magic maker to make them easier to read. Once you've figured out which button does what, the on-screen menu system is pretty straightforward and easy to navigate. User-adjustable settings include brightness, contrast, color temperature, and clock/phase adjustments.
You can also use the left and right arrow buttons to raise and lower the speaker volume. The HG216D's performance was less than stellar. Using the DisplayMate () LCD diagnostic suite, I found the panel had trouble reproducing shades of light gray.
